A driftway is an ancient drove road, a way of indeterminate width and undefined parameters, a track that marks the landscape with the echoes of the countless footsteps and hoofbeats of the multitudes that have travelled along it. All of them gone now, gone to ghosts. This driftway is somewhere on the once-contested border between Wales and England, on one side or perhaps the other of the River Wye; mud, puddles, dappling light. And someone who is no longer there.
This picture is made by using 152 sheets of 23ct gold leaf to gild a sheet of handmade paper, which is made from 100% long fibred cotton rag. The sheet is 110 cm in diameter, one of the largest handmade rag papers made anywhere in the world. The ink used was made using original Yves Klein Bleu pigment from Adam in Paris.
The work is framed in a 4 section 1200mm diameter circular frame finished in a black cinnabar stain, float mounted, and glazed with Uv70 art glass.
